Not to long ago I had some new business cards and post cards printed. I was really impressed with the results to say the least. They were printed on a type of paper called “Plike” or plastic like paper. The business card is a little narrower and more elegant than a traditional card. The whole thing was a wonderful success and the mailer went out last month in velum envelopes.

First off I would like to apologize for the lack of blogging material as of late. Its been an extremely busy summer and there has been no lack of things to write about but rather too many projects and not enough time. Most of my recent blogs have been at mndigitechs.org, one of the groups Im working with to help educate our community about the semi-new or at least widespread use of the role of Digital Techs. This is just one of the things Ive been working on. The other is Assistant Liaison for ASMP Minneapolis/St. Paul Chapter.
What I really want to do is encourage you to come see Dick Durrance at MCAD tommorow it will be great to hear this award winning photographer speak about his experiences photographing for National Geographic, combat in Vietnam and his work on global advertising campaigns. His presentation is sure to remind us why we got into this business in the first place, love of ideas and pictures!

Stay tuned in November for a meeting focused on Digital Techs:
A panel of local and out of town Techs will have an open ended discussion about this new, changing field and how it relates to what you as a photographer do.

In the last month or so this has come up a few times on the job where a image would not rotate to vertical in the new Capture One 4 software. Usually this problem comes about when you attempt to shoot strait down. The camera has a built in spirt level that can be confused so that the auto rotate function does not work correctly.
I made this video to document a method that seems to work. It involves saving a style with the proper rotation (call it “rotate right” for instance). Save this style at the bottom of the adjustments clipboard in the little pull down menu that says styles. Then attempt to use it under next capture adjustments > other then choose default with style and then choose the style “rotate right” that you saved in the adjustment clipboard tab. Ironically this doesn’t work…. But…. After capturing a image while using default with style go ahead and manually rotate the image. Now you can choose copy from last and magically it works, the file is rotated on import. It wont work until after you have attempted to use default with style then switch to copy from last or copy from primary.
Note: this test was with my nikonD80 auto rotate set to off. Im interested for someone to replicate it with a 5D mark ll or a Mark lll.
feel free to email me with questions:

So Recently Ive been going to the Downtown Library and checking out photography books. I found this book by a professor of photography and imaging at NYU. Very heady stuff! I use it to go to sleep at night… Anyway he talks about something very intresting that you will probably be seeing more of in advertising photography as well as journalism.
Excerpt from the Chapter Mosaic Connections:
“The photograph can also be a hybrid: a photo-movie with a piece of it that moves, like video, while the rest remains still; or amalgamated photo-roman with texts bounding from its guts; a polyphony with sounds emanating from one area while different sounds emerge from another when provoked by a readers cursor; an unfolding image poem.”
I just had a friend tell me that you can get 6.0 GB of RAM in the previous generation of MacBook Pro. Its available thru OWC which is very reputable RAM.
I found this pretty interesting with allot of great ways to customize and ease daily computer tasks:
30 Must-Have Tweaks For Your Mac | How-To | Smashing Magazine.
Allot of it is pretty basic (I am a tech after all) but putting the activity monitor in the dock was something I never thought of!
The firmware update for the Canon 5D MKII was released today includes the following updates:
Includes a function to enable the manual exposure setting when shooting movies.
Disables the function of the depth-of-field preview button when images are played back or when the menu screen is displayed on the LCD panel.
Fixes a phenomenon where the peripheral illumination of images cannot be properly corrected, even if the images were captured with the lens peripheral illumination correction function set to Enable. *Digital Photo Professional software version 3.6.1 or later (for Windows and Macintosh) can be used to automatically correct the peripheral illumination of RAW and JPEG images that were captured in the Peripheral illumination correction setting with cameras that have Firmware Version 1.0.7 or earlier.
Fixes the algorithms of the Auto Lighting Optimizer function when Custom Function C.Fn II-3 Highlight tone priority is enabled.
Fixes incorrect indications on the Arabic, Romanian, Spanish, and Ukrainian menu screens.
Changes the battery information displayed on the camera when using the optional Battery Grip BG-E6.

Picked one of these up the other day for a photographer. Should allow outlet free use for a full workday. Very cool- Hypermac
You know I really do love timing my shut-down between shots, back-ups and card downloads in order to change out a apple internal battery (sarcastic tone).
The batteries from Battery Geek seemed over complex and well for lack of a better word “Geeky” to me..
